Probably will just use paperclips to short across the steel shaft, micro-switches would be nicer but I fear there's not enough space for mounting them for 3rd and 4th gear.
You will see from the pictures that I have cut extra bits to make up a second device when I've mastered it.

And the result looks like this.
General thoughts are that the gates are a little too wide (so will have to make closer on the next one), but apart from that it shifts OK. When you drill/cut the outer gates (gears 1,2,5 & 6) remember that the shaft will be angled, a keep checking against you base that the shaft has enough travel to lock into gear.
Next is to find an old game pad to rip apart...

This afternoon I attempted something similar, with a few adjustments. I cut the head off the 6inch 3/8ths bolt so that a shifter knob could be installed directly, and instead of the spring I just used a short piece of 5/8ths fuel line with a bolt fixing it to the bottom of the box.
Next to get a cheap chopping board to make the 'H' pattern and a 2nd hand game controller to wire it up...
