How does trackgen handle textures?

I had been working on a track back … oh, six or seven months ago. Anyway, long story short, I'm just now getting back to it and I don't remember where I left off, so I'm essentially starting again from scratch. I have some questions:
1. I assume that sd2-trackgen uses the surface choices made in track-editor (grass, concrete, etc.) to assign the basic textures the the .ac file it generates. These can then be manually edited and new textures can be substituted. Is that a correct assumption?
2. I noticed that there was some discussion years ago about variable track widths, it was not available to be used in TORCS and there were plans to implement it in SD, has that ever happened or are tracks limited to a single width all the way around?
