So now is no more a news that there is a linux Steam client in the work from Valve.
Is this a good or a bad news for Open Source Linux Games?

Will the big availability of commercial games kill the opens source linux game comunity that has been in a sort-of monopolistic position so far?

Or will this just attract more developer to the linux platform?

What do you guys think?

Greetings!
I would like to raise some of my ideas about the addition of "Steam" to Linux ...
To evaluate how it will affect "Steam" in "Speed Dreams" is to consider the pros and cons of a business network for "Open Source" development (if I remember correctly, the free fraction of "Steam" is very small) .. .
I would like this news favors the development of "Speed Dreams" as an open program, as it is today, and not become it on a commercial program that would destroy the fundamental idea of the simulator, it is to be involved in the "Open Source" development.
You, administrators and developers, and we, participants and players, are who will keep alive the idea of "open source" of the simulator, and I hope so ...
See you!

P.S.: I hope you can understand my ideas, I tried to express them as best as possible, but my English is not very refined, because my natural language is Spanish...

Hi,
I see this a benefit in two directions....

Firstly proving that the underlying OS is nothing.... all modern games run through custom engines which abstract the OS/hardware. Think of the benefits for running on Linux; a system that your kids can corrupt with random trojans and virus, you could even have a game specific login if you didn't trust your self. Should put an end to the need to dual boot.

Secondly, they might offer a conduit for 'free' open-source games getting more eyes on our little project. Unless one of us win the lotto, I guess we'll never get the to comercial level - but I'm fine with the 'slowish' development cycle and having fun figuring stuff out as I go.

Cheers.

I'm not familiar with Steam, but I hope they allow open source games in. It would give projects such as Speed Dreams exposure alongside existing games.

It's quite interesting looking at what's going on with rFactor 2 right now. They obviously have more money and exposure than we do, but if we could attract even a fraction of the modding community they have it would be awesome! Perhaps getting on Steam would attract a bit of that.
