Spam on the forum

Postby mungewell » Fri Feb 21, 2014 1:07 am

I'm sure that you've all noticed that someone (or some company) has decided that posting about their favorite squirrel is going to make them money. It's likely that they're not hoping that our readers are going to buy a new squirrel, but expecting that they can raise the 'Google rating' of the company by the fact that Google indexes our postings and sees lots of mentions....

I've been banning the user accounts and deleting the postings, which isn't a huge headache but also does not serve to discourage the activity as the posts are most likely already indexed by the time I see them.

The 'banning rate' for the past couple of months is shown in attached plot.

I would be 'better' if we could prevent the posts from the get-go... any suggestions?
Simon.

well thanks for the work,
since it's most of the time the same spambot something like ip-banning might be useful.

maybe something like this could help (i dont't know the first thing about forum software so i might be wrong)?

We had a similar problem on a couple of forums i frequent, and it was solved by putting a on new user registrations. Even two captchas are needed in some cases, because these spambots are getting increasingly smart in breaking them, but when you have two they don't know which one they solved.

Right now, looking at the members list, i can tell that the infestation started December 16, and that you have 100+ dormant spambots registered on the forum. These should be all banned ASAP, before they get a chance to post - imagine ALL of them start posting 20+ spam topics a day each (that happened at the other forums i told you about)! Do not wait for them to post, you need to act now!

Basically everyone in the members list from Dec 16 who has a website link listed is most likely a spambot (just check the links).
