What exactly is OSG anyway? Is it a new graphics engine? It sure sounds like it.

Yes, exactly that, a new graphic engine that should give SD some performance gain and enable some nice(r) effect.

It currently use SSG: a custom build one.

Ogre I think.

Currently SpeedDreams is using PLIB for graphics. The new graphics engine uses the OpenSceneGraph library. If you compile the latest sources yourself you can already try the new OSG graphics now. It is not very hard to do (at least if you are using Linux; I don't know about Windows).
